Hello beautiful people! I know, it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me! It has been quite the year. For now, let’s leave it at that. But, of COURSE it’s Colleen Hoover that has me back in the blogosphere! Let’s thank the lovely folks at Thomas Allen & Son for the copy of Regretting You by Colleen Hoover and the stop on this tour! Get ready friends, you’re not going to want to put this one down!
There is something simple but addictive about her books, and I’m not sure exactly what that is. I love them but I can’t fully describe why. I said this to a friend once, and they responded, you mean she’s a good writer? And I was like, huh, yeah, I suppose that’s it! There’s more to it than that, but, that’s essentially it. She’s a terrific writer who tells compelling stories. Regretting You is no exception!
From #1 New York Times bestselling author of It Ends with Us comes a poignant novel about family, first love, grief, and betrayal that will touch the hearts of both mothers and daughters.
Morgan Grant and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Clara, would like nothing more than to be nothing alike.
Morgan is determined to prevent her daughter from making the same mistakes she did. By getting pregnant and married way too young, Morgan put her own dreams on hold. Clara doesn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her predictable mother doesn’t have a spontaneous bone in her body.
With warring personalities and conflicting goals, Morgan and Clara find it increasingly difficult to coexist. The only person who can bring peace to the household is Chris—Morgan’s husband, Clara’s father, and the family anchor. But that peace is shattered when Chris is involved in a tragic and questionable accident. The heartbreaking and long-lasting consequences will reach far beyond just Morgan and Clara.
While struggling to rebuild everything that crashed around them, Morgan finds comfort in the last person she expects to, and Clara turns to the one boy she’s been forbidden to see. With each passing day, new secrets, resentment, and misunderstandings make mother and daughter fall further apart. So far apart, it might be impossible for them to ever fall back together.
Part of the… fun of 2019 has been a prolonged reading slump. Many of the books I did manage to read this year were audiobooks. When the opportunity for this tour came up though, I knew I had to jump on it. I love CoHo. I started reading Regretting You as soon as it arrived. Like usual, I was hooked immediately.
I’ve come to an age where I find myself relating more, if not exclusively, to the “adult” characters in books, shows, movies, etc. And it’s freaky sometimes, okay?! But this was one of the not-so-freaky times. Yes, I’m closer to the mother Morgan’s age… but I can still relate to and enjoy the story of the teenage daughter, Clara, too.
This book certainly has its share of romance. But the main relationship in Regretting You is between mother and daughter. Morgan and Clara’s relationship has become complicated, and not just because Clara is a teenager (but I won’t give any spoilers). All the relationships in this book are complicated, but that of mother-daughter is central. Morgan is caught between protecting the daughter she loves and having her angry with her, or telling her the truth and hurting her more. Clara is angry, hurt, and confused, and doesn’t quite yet see her mother as a whole person outside of “mom.”
I don’t want to give too much away because I went in blind and I prefer it that way. But I loved it! I loved the characters and their quirks and complexities. The alternating perspective and/or timeline is one of my favourite devices and you get a bit of both in this one. And sdkgjsndflgn there is a ship I ship hard from the beginning and if you have a heart I’m sure you will too 😉
If you’ve read CoHo before, it’s a no brainer! If you haven’t but love a good story with the perfect balance of romance, family, and emotion, this one might be right up your alley.
