January Book Haul | When your “ban” is more of a “guideline”

I know this is a bit late, but, whatever. So, I tried really hard to take it easy in January, and I had been going well for the first half… But then… It just kind of went down hill. You know how it is. I went a bit overboard, but it could have been worse!

Anyway, here are the lovely books that I acquired over the month of January.

Let’s go left to right, beginning with the comics! I got the first four volumes of Saga by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Stapes as well as the first volume of Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick. I also read all of these! Pop over to my January wrap up for some more details and my brief thoughts!

While browsing at Chapters, I found the box set of the first four books in Abbi Glines’ Sea Breeze series for $15! I couldn’t resist. I have yet to read a novel by her, but now I have four! I’m hoping to start this series soon.

Simon and Schuster Canada was kind enough to send me an ARC of Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell. This is a Peter Pan retelling, and I wrote a full review! Check it out for my thoughts!

Next we’ve got Vicious by VE Schwab. If we’re being honest, I’ve never read one of her books before. I’ve heard nothing but good things though, especially about Vicious. So, I thought it would be a good place to start!

After reading Furiously Happy last year, I knew I had to get my hands on Jenny Lawson’s first memoir, Let’s Pretend this Never Happened. So, I did!

After hearing all the amazing things about The Raven Cycle all over the bookternet, I was slowly warming up to the idea of reading the series for myself. The excitement surrounding the final book’s release this year pushed me over the edge. I order the first book, The Raven Boys, then, immediately upon finishing, ordered the next two. And subsequently devoured them. You can read my short thoughts in my wrap up!

I had been hearing great things about The Shore by Sara Taylor in 2015, and then saw it pop up on several best-of lists. I knew there was one list it really need to be on: my TBR. So, here we are.

Simon and Schuster Canada also sent me an ARC of Black Apple by Joan Crate. This is a coming of age story set in the Residential School system in Canada. This book does not promise to be an easy read, but I’m sure it will be a powerful one.

Random House Canada sent me a lovely finished hardback of Kelley Armstrong’s latest book, City of the Lost. You may know I’m a huge fan of her Cainsville series and was really excited to get into another adult mystery series by her! It did not disappoint! Check out my full review here.

Finally, I found a paperback copy of The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt at my library book sale for fifty cents. Pretty decent if you ask me!

You know what? While writing this post, two things occurred to me. 1) I may have also got The Tsar of Love and Techno and Fifteen Dogs in January as well. But it also could have been in the last week of December. I’m really not sure… And 2) Either way, I’m actually impressed with myself! I’ve already read more than half of these books!! Woohoo!

What books did you get in January? Are you on any sort of book-buying ban or doing any related challenges? Have you read any of the books I got this past month? What did you think?
